The structures of the three types of conditional sentences

The first conditional

CONDITION : if + subject + present simple

RESULT : subject + future

Example : If he works harder, he will pass his exam.

The second conditional

CONDITION : if + subject + simple past

RESULT : subject + conditional tense

Example : If I had a lot of money, I would buy a new car.

The third conditional

CONDITION : if + subject + past perfect

RESULT : subject + past conditional tense

Example : If you had worked harder, you would have passed your exam.

When to use the three types of conditional.

  • The first conditional : it is possible and also very likely that the condition will be fulfilled.

  • The second conditional : it is possible but very unlikely that the condition will be fulfilled.

  • The third conditional is used to talk about unreal situations in the past.
