The English verbs make / let; allow / enable: get / have are called causative verbs because they cause something else to happen.

Rule 1

We use the following patterns to express obligation, permission or possibility:

Fondamental

Make / let + object + infinitive without to:

Exemple

  • He made him promise.

  • They let her go.

Fondamental

allow / enable + object + to + infinitive

Exemple

  • They allowed us to come.

  • it enabled me to leave.

Rule 2

• We can express a causal relationship with:

have / get + object + past participle:

Exemple

She had / got her hair cut.
